We are Sofia Abril, Paki Daman, Ovidia Langeland, Sascha Rutten and Sarit Wagenaar, first-year students from International Development Management.
Last month, we went to Romania to work on a project proposal for ADR, a North-East Regional Development Agency, a local NGO. We conducted research, interviews, and observations. After gathering all this information, a specific problem kept recurring. Lonely elderly. As many people, especially youngsters, leave the area, the sense of community is decreasing. On top of that, insufficient health care and social services affect the livelihoods of older generations.

Product Description 

To combat this loneliness, we came up with an idea. A buddy-to-buddy project called Stronger Together. In this program, elderly people will be matched with someone from a younger generation based on interests and/or hobbies. The idea is that they will meet up at least once a week, and do activities together, have a chat, or help each other with practical tasks. In addition to the one-on-one meetings, there will be community gatherings. These could take place at church, at the lake, in a bar, or elsewhere. This way, we hope to create a stronger community in our area, where loneliness among the elderly will decrease, and the younger generation will feel a sense of community belonging again.
