In a society where circularity, inclusion and sustainable mobility are essential, Spijkerbikes offers a creative and social solution. We collect abandoned and unused bicycles from the neighborhood Spijkerkwartier in Arnhem and give them a second life. Each bicycle is repaired by people to whom the labor market has created distance, offering them a meaningful opportunity to rebuild confidence and gain work experience.
Our work connects people and bikes, literally and figuratively. Every Spijkerbike comes with a Spijkerpoppetje: a small figure made from recycled bicycle spokes. It symbolizes the stories behind each bike, both from the people who donated or brought in a bike with a personal story and from the mechanics who are working their way (back) toward the labor market. It’s a symbol of dignity, resilience and connection.
Through this campaign, we don’t just fix bikes, we tell human stories, reduce waste and move people forward.
At Spijkerbikes, repairing a bicycle means more than fixing something broken, it’s about giving people and materials a second chance. We offer work and training opportunities to people who’ve had trouble connecting to the labor market, helping them build skills, structure and confidence for the future. We collect old and abandoned bicycles, repair them using reused parts and get them back on the road. In doing so we reduce waste and support a circular economy. Every bike comes with a Spijkerpoppetje: a small figure made from bicycle spokes. It represents both the person who brought in the bike, often with a personal story and the person who repaired it. These figures make each bike unique and highlight the human value behind our work. Our bikes are affordable and we offer support to those who need it. Through repairs, events and partnerships, we bring people and opportunities together, one bike at a time.
