For our project, we worked in collaboration with the municipality of Alexandru cel Bun (part of Pietra Neamt) and the regional development agency ADR-NE. The mayor of Alexandru cel Bun, Cosmin Bălan, sensed that the residents lacked happiness in recent years and our task was to identify the existing problems in the municipality. After our initial research, observations during the transect walks and conducted interviews with residents, we came up with our project proposal.
Our project aims to reduce loneliness and social isolation among elderly residents in Alexandru cel Bun by creating a community center in an existing building, run by local volunteers and supported by professionals such as sports coaches and physiotherapists. The center would help (elderly) people feel seen, respected, included, and more connected to the wider community.
We, Ariana, Reinout, Saartje, Isa and Kimberley, are first year International Development Management students, and with the help of Andra, Romanian student at the University of Lassi working as our translator, we performed both the desk research, during the research, project management and coaching classes, and field research, during our week in Romania doing interviews and transect walks in our designated area.
