BuitenKlas is an educational concept that aims to reconnect young people with nature, biodiversity and their own living environment. We focus on upper-level VMBO students in the Arnhem region, because this target group often spends a lot of time indoors and may experience nature as boring, slow or distant. With BuitenKlas, we make nature education more practical, active and relevant.
Instead of learning only through theory lessons inside the classroom, students take part in a fully organised excursion day where they experience how biodiversity and short supply chains are connected. By combining local nature areas, food initiatives and technology such as drones, we make the green living environment visible in a way that fits young people. Students do not only walk through the nature, but they also understand biodiversity from a wider perspective.
Our goal is for students not only to learn what biodiversity means, but also to understand why it matters and what they can do themselves to deal more consciously with their environment. BuitenKlas contributes to stronger nature awareness and a better connection between students, schools and the local environment. At the same time, the concept shows that innovative technology can support outdoor education instead of replacing it.
BuitenKlas is a one-day excursion for upper-level VMBO students in which nature, biodiversity, drones and local food chains come together in a practical learning experience outside the classroom. During the excursion, students explore local nature, visit food-related initiatives and use drone footage to analyse the area from above.
Team BuitenKlas consists of Constantijn Dijkstra, Ricky Schonis, Tijs ter Grote and Tobias Wessels. We are students of Management of the Living Environment at Van Hall Larenstein. Together, we are developing an educational concept that makes nature education more active, modern and relevant for upper-level VMBO students in Arnhem. Within the team, we combine organisation, creativity and practical situations to create an inspiring excursion day for schools.
In order: Ricky Schonis, Constantijn Dijkstra and Tijs ter Grote.
