A new mechanical weaning assistant hits the market! BERTA reduces stress in calves while allowing us to wean them early and still have control over their healthy social development. This is a new tool for farmers to control and mitigate stress that can occur from early separation. BERTA can decrease space use by removing igloos and the barns that housed them separately and instead have the calves together to help them develop emotionally and socially and with BERTA as BERTA is mobile.
Signs of stress are hard to measure, but according to Beef Cattle Research Council and Schmid (2025) calves wearing anti-suckling nose-paddles vocalized 97% less, spent 23% more time eating and walked 5.8 kilometers per day less than their abruptly weaned counterparts in the four days after separation from their dams. BERTA aims to replicate those results in your farming setting without changing your primary barns and improve your image with the public.
BERTA puts all the essentials into one - on her legs there are brushes for the calves to groom themselves. She can also dispense milk emulating the typical nursing behaviors calves would otherwise express with their mother, making them eager and willing to nurse which will keep them nice and healthy without disturbing their metabolism or immunity.

Berta is a feeding robot designed to improve calf welfare while remaining compatible with modern dairy farming systems. Unlike conventional calf-feeding methods, Berta enables calves to be housed and fed in social groups, promoting natural social behaviour and reducing stress associated with individual rearing.
To further enhance calf well-being, Berta incorporates welfare-oriented features such as integrated brushes that provide environmental enrichment and encourage natural grooming behaviour. In addition, the system offers a more natural drinking experience compared to traditional bucket feeding. Equipped with intrinsic flow sensors and artificial nipples, Berta stimulates a drinking behaviour that more closely resembles natural suckling, thereby supporting healthier feeding patterns and calf development.
